Our school is for students that are focused on creative and performing arts. They are a vibrant and eclectic group that is exceptionally talented in music, dance, fine arts, performing arts, culinary arts, etc.
Our students are goal-oriented and pursue their dreams.
They amaze me on a daily basis with their knowledge, compassion, and ambition to learn. I had a 5th grade boy come to me the other day wanting to know if the library had video equipment that he could borrow. I had to tell him that no, unfortunately, I do not loan video equipment, but I could find out if any teachers on campus do? He told me that his goal is to be a film director and that he has some ideas that he wants to share with our school community. Not being able to help him broke my heart!
I work with all the students at our school as the campus Library and Learning Resources Technician. And my goal is to help them learn and thrive in our learning community, at home, and in our world. Go Wildcats!
My Project
This will be the beginning of a Maker Space in our library.
We have an amazing room that is attached to the library called the Fireside Gallery, which will be the perfect place to house a creative space.
It was originally built to be a reading room and has a fireplace and beautiful white wooden walls. The back wall is all glass and lets in an amazing amount of natural light. Just outside the windows is our Secret Garden, a tranquil walled garden and patio.
Right now the room houses a small part of the library book collection and hosts several art shows a year. The plan is to move the books into the main collection and install a maker space to bring STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) concepts to our more than 1,100 students.
The goal is to provide the inspiration and needed supplies, then set them free to think outside the box and create hands-on projects that inspire them for the rest of their lives. Maker Spaces help foster lifelong creative learners and inspire kids to pursue careers in STEAM-related fields such as art and science.
