This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My fifth graders live in a primarily working class and immigrant neighborhood. Some of them are learning English as a second language, some have special needs, some are gifted, and they all love to learn. We empower students through project-based learning, as we integrate the arts in all curricular areas, including the humanities, history, literature, and science.

Our motto is, "The world is changing, and change starts with me." Each year we share our learning with the school community and the surrounding neighborhood, as we host student-made film festivals, project museums, and special events.

My Project

Every year we combine art with math and language arts to make interactive notebooks. An interactive notebook is a learning tool where students record their ideas, develop questions, and use as a resource. It's almost like creating your own personal textbook. How do they do that? In math they can glue fraction bars using colorful paper or write math vocabulary using different colored markers or pencils. They use elements of art and design to personalize their notebooks and give them an artistic quality that serves both form and function.

We are asking for "notebooking" supplies like markers, pencils, Post-it notes, and gluesticks.

Plus, we need pouches to store our materials and sticky note easel pads to make giant versions of our notebook entries. We will use these materials in all academic areas including math, writing, science, and history.

With your generous donation, my students will turn their notebooks into works of art.
