My Project
At the beginning of the year, my hope is that students will get to know each other and form powerful bonds that will support them all year. In addition to creating a strong community, I also help them see that their unique traits make our community even stronger.
One way we explore our identities is by creating self-portraits.
Students study themselves in the mirror and notice their skin color and facial features. I encourage them to choose the shade closest to theirs and to draw their features as accurately as possible. Students are proud to display these in the hallway for friends and family to see.
The DUPLO legos will help students begin to recognize and explore their emotions. Open-ended play gives students opportunities to explore large topics in their own ways. Then they are able to draw on that experience to support real-life emotional regulation.
