it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
William Wordsworth once said, "Fill your paper with the breathings of your heart." I want to inspire my students to share the things in their hearts and minds through writing. But quite honestly, working with plain paper and pencil doesn't do my students' imaginations justice. They need more.
My class is made up of a diverse group of English-language learners from Denver.
Our school is almost entirely made up of a free-and-reduced lunch population, and many of my students come from families who are struggling to make ends meet. My students love coming to school, and feel at home in my classroom. I want to keep the learning materials I have for them fun, challenging, and relevant, and we need new writing supplies desperately.
My Project
I am asking for classroom sets of whiteboard markers, crayons, markers, and colored pencils that will help my students bring their writing to life. Most of my students start school with very few supplies of their own, and almost no ability to replace lost or broken supplies as the year goes on. Being able to use new, high-quality art supplies during our writing class will be incredibly motivating to students who are working hard to put their ideas onto paper and learn the mechanics of writing.
As simple as it sounds, being able to create beautiful stories will help instill a sense of pride in my young writers.
That sense of pride is powerful; it will motivate students to keep improving their writing craft and sharing their stories. The more you do, the more you grow, especially in writing. Please consider donating to this grant to help make my classroom's writing projects bold and beautiful, and a truer reflection of the amazing authors themselves.
