My students need paint, brushes, pencils, canvas, paper, textile products, and tools in order to facilitate their creative expression in our arts club.
At the Urban Assembly School of Business for Young Women (UASBYW), our girls come from everywhere - from Mali to the Dominican Republic and everywhere in between, crossing oceans and continents to find themselves in our classrooms in New York City. They are bright, diverse, fierce, proud, and they are hungry for opportunity.
As an unscreened Title 1 school, many of our students come to us far below grade level in math and reading, struggling with learning and behavioral disabilities, traveling from communities that commonly experience violence or crime, or from single parent households that are almost always run by devoted mothers who want nothing but the best for their daughters.
Many of our girls are eager to find an outlet for artistic expression; to have a space in which they can reflect on their life experiences and create new ones with their peers in a safe and enriching environment.
My Project
I'm requesting supplies such as paint, canvases, paintbrushes, drawing paper, pencils, and textile supplies so that our girls can work on creating and expressing themselves through art and DIY projects.
Having access to materials such as these will allow my students to develop their own projects and ideas, some with an emphasis on artistic expression, such as painting, others with a focus on the complexity and historic background of art such as origami, and still others that will focus on practicality such as knitting a scarf.
The ability to provide the necessary materials for my students will give them a great sense of appreciation, pride, and confidence in their school and their club.
