My students need to learn through play. These learning games will allow them to apply their critical thinking skills, practice English, and exercise character traits.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Most of my students are current or former English Language Leaners. They are curious and enthusiastic but they still have major hurdles to pass before they are meeting Common Core standards for their grade. They love math but they need multiple opportunities to practice academic English with peers.
I teach at a large urban elementary school.
Many of my students are still learning English. They love school and our class attendance exceeds the school goal of 95% every month. Their families are dedicated to education and support and encourage us daily. The majority of my students are performing below Common Core grade level standards and need targeted, differentiated and scaffolded instruction to catch up. Our school is also under some construction currently which leaves recess to be not an option. Many of my students and their families have committed to working additional hours after school and on Saturdays to hopefully close the gap as fast as possible.
My Project
These learning games will be used daily during small group instructional time. Students will have the opportunity to practice English, critical thinking skills, and academic learning behaviors with their peers. I am attempting to create a classroom environment that transfers ownership of our goals and learning objectives to the students and this requires a diversity of choices for students. These games will also help to supplement recess for students as construction has taken away our outdoor play area for the foreseeable future.
These materials will support my current and future students.
Learning should be fun and "sticky" whenever possible and these games will help us engage and remember. These games will also allow students to practice choice in their learning. They will also allow time for students to practice their academic learning behaviors to hopefully set them up for success as students for the rest of their academic careers.
