This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am a second-year art teacher in Kansas at a Title I building. The students in my school come from lower socioeconomic backgrounds and don't have the privileges to experience different types of art outside of the art room. Of our 272 students, 75% are free or reduced-price lunch.
My students love art, and many of them do not have the resources and tools at home to create art outside the art room.
My students love when they are able to work with clay. Last year, I started a clay club. We meet weekly and they have a blast! They are so eager to throw on the wheel and I would love to continue this club with the help to fund the clay and new glazes.
My Project
My students loved having the first clay club at our school this past year. I would love to continue it next year and supplying the clay and new glazes would allow it to do so. The glazes will allow my students to learn glazing techniques and be able to glaze the clay piece they build and throw within the club. My students love working with clay, and many of them don't have the means to outside the art room. As a teacher in a Title 1 school building, I want to allow my students with as many opportunities with different art mediums as I can. In clay club, the clay will be used for hand building and wheel throwing. The clay will allow my students to further their creativity with clay. These materials will have a lasting impact on my students. How many students can say they throw on a wheel in elementary school? Having the resources such as wheel throwing, my students are learning an amazing skill that they can carry on into middle and high school art if they choose to do so. Working with clay is something they would do in every art class if they could and we had an endless supply. Clay Club has allowed me to continue to open my students' eyes to a new medium and way of art.
