My Students
I have collaborated with the school counselor all year to address bullying and build community in my 6th grade classroom, but we need to step up our awareness and response to bullying as a team by creating collaborative videos, posters, books, and presentations.
I teach 6th grade at a Title I School with 84% of students on the free and reduced lunch program.
We are the most diverse school in our state, with over 30 languages spoken on campus. My current class size is 35 (a huge increase from past years), and space is limited! Our school is a K-8 that merged an elementary and middle school 4 years ago, and we are finally securing our school's new image.
My Project
Our school counselor teaches a weekly lesson about bullying or building community, and I support those ideas every day in the classroom. However, students' personal space is very cramped in the classroom, and up to three students share one locker. Unfortunately, when bullying occurs, it is usually in areas without supervision.
I want my students to take a leadership stance when it comes to bullying in our school. With digital cameras, students will be able to take video and collaborate to make informative videos; they will also use the camera to take pictures to for posters or to support a speech/presentation to other classes about bullying, and with a few extra art supplies their visuals (posters, brochures, books) will really stand out so they can be proud of their collaborations. Once their projects are completed, they will present them to other classes (and possibly volunteers from the community) to help stop bullying.
By taking a leadership role to combat bullying in our classroom, my students will not only build greater confidence in themselves, but they will have an impact school wide.
We don't have a lot of "fun" resources and I want my students to express themselves without limits. By supporting this project you will give them the opportunity to be a part of a bigger movement to stop bullying.
