Creative Chords: a musical self-expression initiative

Help me give my students a piano for our music classroom, and some new mallets for our xylophones and metallophones.

My Project

According to Plato, "music is a moral law. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination," and as a music educator, I can attest to the life-changing power of music. In my elementary school music classroom, we use our voices for self-expression, we use drum circles to build community, we use instruments for improvisation and exploring creativity, and we learn about history and cultures across the globe by learning about different types of music. My school, Beulah Elementary, is an exceptional public dual-language (Spanish & English) school in which diversity is valued and celebrated. Students have the opportunity to learn multiple languages and learn about other cultures from their peers in addition to their teachers. For this reason, it is important that my music classroom have instruments that can include and celebrate music from many cultures in our classroom, as well as our community performances.

Currently, the electric piano in our classroom has several keys that no longer play, a dangerously fraying chord that shorts out at times, and other times, it simply does not turn on at all.

This can limit student support when we are in chorus rehearsals or singing in class. Additionally, the electric piano we currently have is not easily portable if needed in a different location for a performance, which can limit the music we select for performances. In music class, students love using the xylophones and metallophones to accompany songs we have learned, or for improvisation, but our mallets have not been replaced in over a decade and are falling apart.

Having a new electric piano and new mallets for our xylophones and metallophones would bring so much joy and support to the creative expression in our classroom and performing arts groups for years to come!
