My Students
What better way to learn than hands on? I want to incorporate learning math and life skills though cooking lessons, but lack the necessary tools to cook in the classroom.
My students are special needs kiddos in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade.
They are hands on learners and need lots of practice with daily life skills. I try to find new and creative ways to teach academics and life skills so that each child can participate and learn in his or her own way. My students spend time in the general education setting as well as time in my classroom where I focus on pre-teaching, teaching, and re-teaching skills. Our lessons incorporate core content, life skills, communication, and motor skills. My dream is that I give my students the tools and skills they need to be as independent as they can be.
My Project
Cooking is a great way to teach many math skills as well as life skills including taking turns, following directions, and cooking skills. I am requesting cooking equipment like cook books, a toaster oven, cooling racks and measuring cups as well as resources to add a monthly cooking lesson to our curriculum. Within my lessons I will be able to give my students practice of math skills I have taught, a chance to learn cooking safety and procedures, and practice following directions.
I want my students to be able to see how math is important and used in a way that is very meaningful to them.
Through cooking lessons and activities I will be able to give my students that chance. I will also be giving my students lessons on life skills that they will use when they are adults. I wish I had had a chance to learn how to cook in school!
