This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are motivated to become artists, and they are located in the cultural vibrancy of downtown Los Angeles. We are an audition-free, public arts high school, and our students enjoy a rigorous art and academic education. My students are mainly low-income with over 70% qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, making us a Title I school. They enjoy the local museums, participate in the arts, and thrive in the urban environment.
Our school has a dual mission of excellence in both the arts and academic studies, and our students graduate ready for college and also for further study in the arts.
We have a 99% graduation rate! Each student has as many as 12 art classes during high school, as well as exhibitions and they participate in national and local art contests. We win more Scholastic Art Awards than any high school in the Western United States. These hardworking kids appreciate what they have. You would like them, and you will love their artwork. We have a mission and a mandate to integrate the arts. They are creative, ambitious, and certain to make great use of any art supplies that come their way.
My Project
We all love being in the art studio, but this year my students will be on their own, making art studios in their homes. With the help of my donors, I will be sending home art kits for my students so that they have real art supplies and an authentic experience in their arts classes, even if we only see each other through a video screen.
This project will give each of my painters several canvases to learn how to use acrylic paint.
They will complete portrait, landscape and still life paintings. Having the proper surface for painting allows my students to become real artists.
The black and white colored pencils are a foundation for learning how to draw. Students in Drawing will learn how to properly use light and dark in a drawing done on a brown paper ground. These pencils will be used for several projects and become the personal property of the artists.
