My Project

Our students who experienced the pandemic and the disruption in the normalcy and consistency of going to school in a traditional way see school differently now. There are more students who question the value of education and who have more trouble being in school all day. Experts say their mental health has suffered as well.

My students love to learn, but they do seem more fragile.

They need to talk more and they need more individual attention than they did pre-pandemic. Many of them lost family members or their families suffered financially. Many of them aren’t sure of their own futures.

One way I have tried to help them is by making my classroom more homey, offering more creative assignments, and making sure they have a voice in the classroom. Some of the assignments I have started to include more in my classroom are art-inspired projects, hands-on creating, and reflective writing using composition notebooks. In addition to these assignments, I have tried to add more seating options (floor cushions) and decorations because I want them to want to be in school and feel comfortable in the classroom. I have seen this extra care help and increase buy-in.

My students deserve the best. They are funny, considerate, smart, and genuine people. They are our future!
