My Students

I teach a great group of kindergarten students at a rural school near the coast of South Carolina. Our school houses Pre-K through fifth grade with a student population of about 800 students. Although our elementary school is one of the biggest in our district, we have a family feeling to it that visitors notice when they walk through the front doors. We have a total of six kindergarten classes. With a school this big, our population is extremely diverse. We have very low economic families in our community, but these children are always eager to learn and ready to overcome obstacles. I want to help my students who are just beginning their school careers go even further and really push themselves. Your donations will make that dream possible for my classroom.

My Project

My students need an assortment of paint, paintbrushes, and paper for our creation center. Paint and paper are vital resources that my students use every day in our classroom. Students are given the opportunity to go to the creation center in our classroom, where they can use their imaginations to make their own masterpieces come to life. They can use a number of resources, such as scissors, glue, crayons, and markers, but our classroom is missing an easel to use with paint and paper! What better way to make a robot than to construct one yourself by cutting and gluing pieces of construction paper together and then adding a little paint to make it just right? Using these resources in the classroom provide endless learning opportunities to the students. Learning their primary colors along with the "art" of mixing primary colors to make secondary colors is just the beginning of the many learning opportunities available to the students!

Students learn best by creating and exploring the world around them instead of paper/pencil exercises.

Providing an easel, paint, and paper to our classroom will allow students to demonstrate their understanding of content in a creative way. I cannot think of a better way for students to show their understanding of a story than to recreate the setting and characters with paint and construction paper. I am eager to add these supplies to our classroom and see their irreplaceable works of art!
