I am a Chinese-Mandarin teacher at Galileo Academy in San Francisco. Currently I teach first-year, second-year, and third-year Mandarin Chinese to students in grades 9-12.
I would like to have some basic carving sets where the students can create their own Chinese Chops, also known as Chinese seals.
Chinese Chop is an essential part of a Chinese person's life. It is used very similarly to a person's signature in the U.S. Therefore, it is an essential element in a Chinese person's identity. However, a Chop serves much more than just a "signature". It has been used for authenticating famous art works such as paintings and calligraphy works.
While all my students learn to write their Chinese names, I would like them to have the experience of carving/ creating their own chops. They can use those self-created chops to “stamp?their own art works and projects. This will enhance their Chinese learning experience, expand their cultural knowledge, and allow them to showcase their creativities in designing their names and the appearance of the actual Chop.
The materials I am seeking are carving tools and blocks of carving materials. I am asking for materials that can enhance my students?learning experience while expanding their cultural knowledge through their own artistic creation of a cultural element.
