This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine trying to underline examples on the board with a dried out marker. Imagine trying to watch lecture slides on a tattered screen with tags and rips. And imagine trying to learn history without having maps to guide the learning experience. This is no imaginary scenario, this is our reality.

My students live in one of the roughest and crime ridden areas in Southern California.

100% of my students are minorities who deal with gangs, drugs, and violence on a daily basis. School is not a punishment, but an escape from the problems of our troubled city. Despite the troubles our students face on a daily basis on their way to school in the morning or on their way home after school, their bright faces and hopeful smiles keep our school motivated and thriving. Never will you meet students with so little material but so much perseverance and hope. Thanks to these young minds, our school has become a safe haven for some and a beacon of hope for many more who now believe they may go to college. Walking down the hall you will see the ex-gang banger or the former tagger... did I mention they have 3.0 GPA now? Our students drive our teachers and keep us coming back for more. I can not imagine teaching any where else and with any other group of students.

My Project

As a World History teacher, I know that my students learn best when they are actively involved in the learning process and when they receive instruction and knowledge through different forms. For many students, history becomes difficult and uninteresting if they are unable to connect. These resources will allow my students to not only learn history but visualize and experience it. Markers will allow the students to fully participate in the process by engaging in lessons front and center. With a new projector screen, we can incorporate media more effectively into lessons without worrying about diminished quality. And most importantly, the historical maps will allow students to not simply hear about the battles, wars, and city formations from a text book but actually see examples. They will finally have content specific resources that will allow them to access learning and acquire content through various forms. My students will be able to fully engage and connect with history.

This project will not only make a small difference within our classroom, it will make a substantial impact in the education of our students.

Can you imagine the impact our project would have if even one student decided that his/her interest in education and history was sparked by the things he/she learned in our class? My priority is to make education accessible to every student. This project and your donations WILL make a difference in our class, our community, and our lives. Thank you.
