This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We live in an ever-increasing visual world. We are constantly exposed to images. Images are all around us...on tvs, computers, phones, newspapers, books, billboards, etc... To help my students better understand the modern world, I provide activities that foster visual literacy. Visual literacy is the ability to understand and produce visual messages. It is a staple of 21st century skills. How can we give our students 21st skills without the proper tools?
Our students are amazing!
We have some of the most creative, artistic and inspiring students around. Our students live on the Lower East Side but have roots from around the world—China, Bangladesh, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic—just to name a few. We are an exciting bunch! Many of our students are working on learning a second language. Our school has a dual language program for Mandarin and Spanish. The diversity in our students makes for an exciting learning environment for all— especially in the art room. Our students bring their unique experiences and rich culture into everything they do. What amazing art they create! What wonderful stories they have to share!
My Project
I usually start off every school year with a self-portrait lesson. It gives my students a chance to create art about something they know best—themselves. Self portraiture is the most introspective of art forms. The self-portrait project gives my students the opportunity to reflect on who they are and how they want to present themselves. Some of the best artwork for the year can be found in the self-portraits. One reason why my students have been so successful with the portrait project is that they have had access to portrait mirrors. Portrait mirrors give my students the chance to look closely and notice details about themselves before sketching it on to paper. Oh, the beautiful work my students create when they have the chance to look closely.
Our portrait mirrors are now in need of great repair and are no longer useful.
The mirrors have cracks and do not stand up correctly. The art room needs new portrait mirrors so our students can continue their progress in creating self-portraits.
In addition to portrait mirrors, our students also need pencils and paper. The pencils and paper I selected are perfect for this project. The students will have great success creating self- portraits with these materials.
