My Students
I am a special education teacher that works with middle school aged students that have intellectual and/or emotional disabilities. My students are at an impressionable age where lessons taught now will impact their future. Financial instruction is often not required in schools, but I want them to build strong money habits early on to avoid lifelong money struggles.
My Project
With the shortages of coins and the move towards a cashless society, talking to students about the value of money has never been more important. Children today are growing up in a digital world where digital money is the norm for them. With the prevalence of online shopping and mobile payment services like Venmo, Cash App, and Apple Pay, they can spend cash without even thinking about it. The total of their account drops with ease as one can get carried away and lose track of what they made versus what they have spent.
I want my students to understand the value of a hard-earned dollar.
I want them to be fiscally responsible. I do not want them to normalize living paycheck to paycheck. I want them to be financially literate, and to do so, I must teach them about budgeting, opening a bank account, saving, investing, and entrepreneurship. I must set them up for success in the future. With the funding of this project, my students will be one step closer to becoming smart spenders while building the foundational skills needed to create generational wealth.
