My Project
My students attend a public Pre-K through 8th-grade Montessori school. Our school is comprised of students from all over our city, which has one of the highest poverty rates in the nation. Our Montessori students follow a child-centered approach to develop each child physically, socially, emotionally, and cognitively. Students learn in multi-age classrooms and remain with the same teacher for several years. My classroom is a STEAM Lab and maker space, where each student spends at least 8 weeks using technology and other building materials to create.
This year in the STEAM Lab, the students will be learning to use Canva and Silhouette Design Studio to create their own graphic designs.
Students have an inherent need to express themselves. Allowing them to create their own shirts helps support their self-expression and mental health. This is especially important after the Covid-19 pandemic. We were virtual for a really long time and many students are still struggling to find their way back. We have several new clubs forming and I'd like to have shirts available so they can promote their club and build their teams. This will help give them a sense of belonging that many lost when they were isolated at home during the pandemic. We also had many students create memorial shirts from our first set of blank t-shirts. It is humbling to see how many of our students have experienced loss not just from Covid, but also from violence in their neighborhoods. Having a selection of blank items is necessary for any maker space. Students would be able to create a digital design, and then choose an item to personalize. We need these basic supplies to allow students to continue to grow as makers and strengthen their digital skills, but sharing themselves builds confidence and relationships post-pandemic.
