Creating Sensory Spaces

Help me give my students the tools to de-escalate when they are feeling overwhelmed by the world around them.

My Project

Mid-Del District is a Multi-Cultural school district with students of varied races, religions, economic backgrounds, and intellectual levels.

I believe in creating a project within an Elementary school to represent the sensory needs of our most vulnerable students in that multi-cultural population.

Fluorescent light covers will allow the harsh lighting of the room to be muted, while allowing students to see beautiful trees on the ceiling lights. A chair rocker on the floor will assist those who thrive on movement. A swing stand and sling will allow a different form of movement for students who need the feeling of being in a tight space. A small indoor trampoline will allow many students to fulfill the sensory need for movement. Sensory floor tiles will allow a visual sensory experience, and handheld fidgets will fulfill tactile needs.
