This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I work with a group (two classes) of wonderfully bright second graders! My students are a hard-working group of bilingual learners. They are truly kind, compassionate and curious. Their love of learning is clear. They motivate me to want to provide the best learning environment I possibly can. It is exhausting work but seeing their faces light up when they finally get something is all I need to keep going!
As young as they are, they impress me every day with their strength and courage despite the hardships many of them face.
They continue to come to school and try their absolute best. The progress I have seen in my students so far is impeccable. I want to be able to offer them the best instruction and resources possible- which is hard as a new teacher in an under-resourced area. Please help my students see they are not only defined by where they come from.
My Project
These materials will help provide creative and mathematical opportunities for my second-grade students. They will be used in "morning tubs" during our school's soft-start time to encourage creative thinking and collaboration skills.
Students will be able to start the day thinking, exploring and problem-solving in a calm, stress-free manner.
In addition, these materials will double as math manipulatives to help me reach all learners! As a second-year teacher, I have very few resources to work with. These will allow me to expand learning opportunities for my students and small groups during math lessons.
Many of my students don't have access to materials or even toys at home that encourage STEM (science-tech-engineering-math) skills. Students often say in their free time they watch TV or play video games. I want to take their eyes off the screen and encourage a little thinking and playing every day. And who knows? It may just inspire a future inventor, architect or engineer!
