Creating Save Spaces for Students to Decompress

My Project

Our High School changed our lunch period from a 30 min time slot to a one hour “lunch for all” schedule, giving students a longer time to eat and socialize. Studies have shown that longer school lunch periods are associated with increased student consumption of healthy food choices such as more fruits, vegetables and less plate waste. Additionally, there is a direct correlation between a healthy diet and a student's ability to learn and thrive. Currently we do not have a welcoming space, other than the cafeteria, for students to socialize. Providing safe and comfortable spaces (places to sit and gather) for students during this time will help to develop our student's a strong sense of self and emotional well being. The pandemic and its associated lockdowns have taken a toll on the mental and emotional well-being of many students. Social interaction and human connection are essential for maintaining positive mental health. Safe spaces provide opportunities for students to unwind, relax, and engage in meaningful conversations, which can help alleviate feelings of isolation, anxiety, and depression.
