This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach in a school in Little Village, a predominately Mexican neighborhood in the Southwest Side of Chicago. The school I work in is composed of the majority Latino students with their first language being Spanish. In the years I have worked as a teacher, the students I have had come in everyday with a lot of energy, many questions and ready to learn.
Fourth grade is a very exciting year for students.
Throughout fourth grade students learn to become independent learners. Furthermore, throughout fourth grade students become exposed to the many genres as well as many reading and writing skills. One of the very exciting things of being in fourth grade is that students become independent readers. By the end of fourth grade, students leave being exposed to many different genres of books. They also leave the fourth grade loving books and learning new reading and writing strategies.
My Project
During the fourth grade students are writing a lot more than they did in the third grade. Among the writing being done are narratives, five paragraph opinion pieces, five paragraph persuasive essays and research papers. Currently, the students write their essays in writing paper because I only have one computer in the classroom. I would love to have twenty Chromebooks, where my students can research and type their writing. This will not only improve their typing skills, but it will also allow students to practice creating documents and prepare them for a world full of technology.
As a class the students are still writing their essays like students did decades ago.
Twenty Chromebooks will go a long way in my effort to update learning and teaching strategies. Currently, the only time my students use computers is during high stakes testing. Daily access to computers within the classroom will allow the students to become comfortable with the technology that will surround them as they reach later grades and beyond school.
