My Project

Our Pre-K center primarily serves low-income families and is in its first year of serving the community in Alief ISD. Being new presents challenges when it comes to providing resources, especially when there are large numbers of students per class. My class is made up of twenty-one students in the four- to five-year-old age group, and they are extremely limited by the number of learning materials in the classroom. Since we are an early learning center much of the child's development comes from exploration and play. How can we ensure they are able to learn and develop, without the proper learning tools? To foster their learning experience I have selected magnetic alphabets and puzzles to aid in their alphabet recognition, math counters for rote counting, and dry erase boards and easels for the development of their writing skills. The learning resources selected will dramatically enhance their alphabetical, numerical, and fine motor skills. For example, I have a few non-verbal students who at the beginning of the school year struggled with alphabet recognition. In the classroom, we did not have physical alphabet resources to aid in their development. Therefore, I purchased an alphabet puzzle to foster their recognition of letters. By assessing the students weekly they were able to identify their alphabet in one month. These are the success stories and development accomplishments I desire for my entire class. By providing the selected materials for the classroom, we will increase learning, development in phonics and fine motor, and most importantly, provide them the jumpstart they need to become successful in kindergarten and beyond.
