This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from many different countries across the globe. They speak multiple languages and have unique traditions and practices that I love to learn about from them first hand. Their experiences are both incredible and harrowing, and yet we all come together in the same classroom to find comfort, education, a positive environment, and unique experiences.

What makes these students so special is that they all have something to teach each other, and they always have something to teach me.

Each year, I learn a great deal about my students and about the experiences they've had and the places they've been. In a world where new technology and traditional education is always at our fingertips, it's meaningful for me as a teacher to expose my students to special opportunities, unique trips, and a comfortable setting where learning is evident and expected, and students will remain engaged so that we can try new things and always remain successful!

My Project

The goal of this project is to create a comfortable space for my students to come and feel safe. Last year my school's average daily attendance was between 78% and 85%, and 9th graders had the lowest ADA, proving that a portion of our students falls into the disengaged category. In order to prevent disengagement for future students and in order to reverse it for those that fall into this category I want to build positive relationships, foster learning, and create a space where students will want to come to learn. I want my classroom to feel comfortable and like home. I have requested a large area rug and desk organizers to help with this. I have also requested positive quote posters to hang around the room to make it friendly and inviting and to encourage students to come to school and class.

I want to do everything I can to make sure my students are learning through their own individual needs in a place that is comfortable, safe and provides what they need to remain in school and in class.

Something as simple as an umbrella can make a large difference too. It can help to raise the attendance of a disengaged student. In Hartford, a student does not get access to a school bus unless they live two miles away from school or more. This means that students are often walking far to get to school or to the city bus. On days when it is raining or snowing, our attendance is often lower than normal. I am also requesting umbrellas that I hope to hand out to students in need and provide the chance for them to arrive at school dry, safe, healthy, and loved and increase their average daily attendance so as not to be disengaged.
