Writing is how students express their feelings and emotions, portray their imagination or take an audience on a trip to a far off land. Unfortunately, due to budget cuts our students do not have the ideal paper or journals for each stage of writing.
I have 32 amazing kindergarten students who can tell an amazing story just by drawing a picture.
All of my students love "authors chair" where they get a chance to share their fiction or non fiction stories with their classmates. My class is in a inner city public school district and we faced a massive budget cut, which caused us to buy our own copy paper and school supplies for our students. I have been using copy paper to photo copy the proper lined paper to use for each stage of writing, but it is becoming very costly. The books also have little longevity and become ripped and worn because the inner pages are only protected by construction paper.
My Project
I am asking for Lakeshore learning "Draw and Write" books. Each set of books is geared to a stage of writing. The First Stage of Writing books are bind blank white pages because students just draw pictures and label their objects to tell a story in the first report card quarter. In the second quarter students move into the second stage of writing. In the second stage of writing students draw a picture and begin to write one or two sentences using phonetic spelling to tell their story. The third journal is used in the third and fourth quarters of school. Students begin to tell stories through several sentences and explore punctuation and using many high frequency words.
Literacy is so crucial in any student's education.
Students need to feel that writing is a fun process. These journals will be filled with young readers' ideas, thoughts and imagination that can be share with their peers and family. Most importantly students will feel they have their own personal book of thoughts and stories. My students will be so happy to see an actual journal book with thick pages and a hard cover.
