Creating Our Own Visual Style: Digital Storytelling Edition

My students need 2 Chromebooks, assorted feathers, construction paper, owl pellets and other media to create digital stories.

My Students

I teach Gifted and Talented enrichment classes for four different schools, in the grades kindergarten through fifth.

Some of my students are non-English speakers, but their love for learning is apparent.

My classes consist of diverse learners from various socioeconomic statuses. Some of my students are from low-performing schools and are very excited about their enrichment class, where we can do hands-on activities in addition to the monotone intervention and repetition that usually takes place. This is usually the only time where they are asked to be creative and develop their talents.

My students do not always come from homes where they are told that their future is bright and they can become anything they choose. It is my mission to educate them about all the possibilities that await them and to nurture their talents.

My Project

My students will use the Owl pellets to gain an understanding of about the owl's behavior and the complex nature of the food chains. They will research birds of their choice and create products using the feathers, model magic or paper to use in their storytelling. My students will work in groups of their choice through this inquiry based unit on birds. Each group will be responsible for creating a final product of their choice. The only criteria is that it is in form of a digital story. My students will employ a variety of software options such as powtoons, animoto, movie maker etc to tell a creative fictional or personal story about birds.

Digital storytelling empowers my students to be confident communicators and creators of media as they gain essential 21st-century literacy skills and reach deeper understanding in all areas of the curriculum.

It is my belief that teaching Science is not about preparing students for a world that is static and fixed, but it concerns getting students ready to cope with changes and challenges in their lives. I have found that inquiry based science learning stimulate excitement among students when learning science. This project will give my students opportunities to collaborate, be creative, use critical thinking and engage in team work . All these skills the necessary to become successful in life.
