My students attend a public school in Queens, New York. Many are new immigrants. They come from many different countries including China, Korea, Greece, Pakistan, India, Egypt and Columbia. The class is a true melting pot and we love to share about our different cultures.
My students do not have access to books, supplies and manipulatives needed to learn, due to both monetary issues and the impact of Covid-19 on their families.
Many live in small apartments with siblings, parents, grandparents and other relatives. They are trying to do the best they can with what they have. They want to participate and learn, but due to coronavirus, students in class cannot share materials and children that are remote do not have access to materials at home.
I wish that you could see my students learn. They love learning about our country's history, commemorations and celebrations. During Black History Month, they enjoyed learning about famous people and how they worked to change the world. problem. With your help, I will see my students' faces light up as they learn about and discuss famous women and how they helped shape the role of women in today's society.
My Project
My young readers always hear about the impact that men have made on our country. It's time to teach more about herstory and the contributions that women have made to our society.
Through the read alouds that I have chosen, my class will learn about strong female role models and the impact they have had on our society, including Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg, Serena Williams, Mary Anning and even Beyonce and Lucille Ball!
Through these books and our class discussions, my students will learn what the role of women has been, and what they can all become. Hopefully will gain confidence to go out into the world and become our future leaders, thereby creating their own "herstory".
