Creating Our Environment One Stitch at a Time: Part One

Help me give my students sewing/design skills they can utilize for the rest of their life. Students will be able to take what they learn to create their own clothing, generate income and sharpen their financial literacy skills.

My Students

My students are always eager to learn something new in our life skills Family and Consumer Science class! They absolutely love hands on activities, and it shows during reflection time how much information they absorb and remember when they have a fun protect to assist with their learning. It’s always an added bonus when I begin to see students utilizing what they learned in a previous lesson to sharpen their teamwork ability, leadership skills, or decision making practices.

My classes are mixed with many different learning styles and levels, but no matter the circumstance, my students do a great job to ensure everyone feels at ease learning and growing together in our classroom!

I’m grateful to have a chance to work with so many brilliant minds each day!

My Project

We are requesting 4 Singer sewing machines which will allow my students to learn sewing and design skills they can utilize for the rest of their life.

Students will be able to take what they learn to create their own clothing and items for their own space, they will be shown how their creations can generate income, and they will also learn the importance of making sound business decisions.

The sewing machines will be utilized in many focus areas of the middle school Family and Consumer Science curriculum, including Fashion Design, Interior Design, Early Childhood Education, and the Family, Community, and Leadership units.

Students will learn how to create clothing items and accessories they can wear and utilize in the Fashion Design unit. In the Interior Design unit they will learn how to create pillows, curtains, blankets and other items that can make any space more comfortable. In the Early Childhood Education unit students will stitch storybooks for young children. Students will utilize what they learn in these units to give back to their community by creating stuffed animals for children in shelters and in hospitals, and pillowcase dresses and pajamas for children in need of those items.
