The children in my classroom are from low-income housing. We have 18 children in the class, and each is special in their own way. For the majority of the children in the class, this is their first time in a school environment. The school is located in a low-income neighborhood as well.
Since this is the first time most of these children have been in school, I want them to experience the best a school can offer.
The children are very eager to learn and develop.
My Project
These materials will make a difference in my students' learning by supporting the Incredible Years program we have been implementing in our classroom. This program helps children understand their social and emotional development. Some skills they learn are: how to name feelings, what to do when they are upset, how to solve problems, and so many more. The materials listed will help their social and emotional growth. I collaborated with my assistant teacher to come up with ideas where we could add a social and emotional game or activity to each center. Using these games and materials, the children have more opportunities to learn about feelings, being upset, waiting, and taking turns without having to rely solely on Dinosaur School.
For example, the Magnatiles I asked for our classroom would help the children learn how to take turns.
If there are too many children playing with the magnets, they will learn how to ask to play and how to wait their turn. These are all important goals the children will be working on throughout the school year.
Another way these materials, such as the CDs, will benefit the children is to teach about the different cultures in our classroom and in our world. This will help the children feel more interconnected within our classroom and make us feel more like a classroom family. One of the goals of Dinosaur School is to be a good friend. I feel learning about what makes us different and why we are different will bring everyone closer together.
