Help me give my students 9th and 10th graders seedling pot makers, soil, and seeds to create green spaces within our library and cafeteria as we study the role of plants in urban ecosystems.

My Project
Green spaces can promote our mental well being as well as physical health. Preserving these spaces in cities is important, but oftentimes our students who live in densely populated cities do not have the chance to enjoy the benefits of green spaces throughout the school day.
By creating mini green spaces within a school, such as the cafeteria, library, student lounge, and outdoor walkway, we create opportunities for high school students and staff to take a break during the school day and reconnect with nature.
These mini green spaces will feature many types of herbs, which will present educational opportunities where students can learn about gardening, medicinal properties of plants, and the role of plants in improving indoor/outdoor air quality. My ambitious 9th and 10th grade students will also help design these green spaces by assembling compostable pots with pot makers. Students will also be in charge of caring and tending these potted plants. This project is spearheaded by underclassman; however, it will benefit and serve the whole school community.
Our students can play an important role in preserving green spaces in our communities, which will become more challenging as phenomena like the urban heat island effect worsen. Through these efforts, students will gain a first-hand experience in protecting green spaces in their school environment, which will empower them to protect green spaces in their local communities. They will develop the technical skills and knowledge needed to advocate for greener, sustainable cities for the future.
