This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Wouldn't it be easier for you to learn about math by using hands-on, physical materials and playing games to make math exciting? My first grade class loves to learn through games, puzzles, and manipulatives! We are located in the Little Village neighborhood of Chicago. My students need frequent practice with math to make math skills stick!

I currently have our math time set up in a workshop, so students have time during math daily to practice skills in centers either individually or with partners. Rather than giving the students worksheets, the students thrive on using counters, doing math puzzles, and playing games with a partner. These hands-on opportunities help keep students interested in learning and provide verbal problem-solving skills, which is especially important because many of my students speak English as a second language. However, I do not have the supplies I need to create centers that address all necessary skills.

Our classroom needs a variety of math puzzles and games for math centers and guided exploration. These resources address counting, addition and subtraction, equivalency, comparing and contrasting, and other essential math skills. Each game or activity can be completed individually or with a partner, which allows me to differentiate activities for students of all readiness levels. Without a strong foundation in these areas, students will struggle as they continue through school. As a first grade teacher, I believe that reinforcing these skills with hands-on learning now will build successful mathematicians for years to come.

Rather than expecting all students to do activities in a whole group, these materials can help me meet the needs of each child - and do so in a way that helps foster a love of mathematical learning for all students!
