Creating Marvelous Mathematicians

My students need hands-on geometry building kits, skills books, cardstock, new math games and a Kindle to enjoy the many educational math apps that are available.

My Students

Did you hate math class? Did you think it was too hard and you would never "get" it? Do you remember sitting through "drill and kill" math classes? My goal is to teach math in a fun, enjoyable, entertaining atmosphere so that my students do not become frustrated and discouraged.

I teach at a small, rural, Title I school.

My students range in age from nine to fourteen. Many struggle with difficult circumstances, yet they maintain positive attitudes and are eager to learn. The average per capita income for my county is $17,003. The average for our state is $25,551. The poverty rate in my county in 2010 was 16%. The official U.S. poverty rate in 2010 was 13% (U.S. Census Bureau). With today's economy, I am sure that the statistics are even more daunting. Approximately eighty percent of my students receive free or reduced price lunch. I am amazed at the obstacles my students overcome on a daily basis. Their positive outlook and hope for the future inspires me to continually improvise and improve on my teaching strategies. The students enjoy our interactive learning environment and enjoy the experience of school. I integrate subjects as much as possible so that the students are able to make real life connections and see how today will impact them tomorrow.

My Project

The bulk of this project request is for geometry building kits and a kindle fire. These materials will not only be used in the classroom, they will also benefit all of the students that attend our bi-monthly Family Math Night event. Geometry is a difficult concept for my students. The more that they play with and manipulate the hands-on materials, the more they will understand and learn. If they can build a three dimensional shape if will be easier for them visualize later. Exploration and discovery are important tools in the successful mastery of math concepts. The Kindle will allow my students to access mathematical apps that are entertaining, engaging and educational. It is imperative that my student's are familiar and comfortable with technology because it is a vital component of the future.

My desire is to teach in a fun and engaging manner so that the children are actively involved in their own learning. My hope is to provide them with new materials so that they remain excited about exploring and discovering the way that math relates to their everyday lives and the world in which we live.
