Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Can you imagine how hard it is to capture the attention of today's students with all the distractions of our digital world and societal problems? My students want that opportunity to be engaged in what they read, but the materials need to be current and captivating.

I teach in a low income school where my students come from many different neighborhoods all over the Bronx.

There are many financial and emotional challenges that my students deal with on a daily basis. Coming to school is sometimes a respite from the difficulties they deal with everyday. It is a constant challenge to gain their attention away from their daily lives and struggles and onto the work we have to do. Students are excited when they can lose themselves in their work and not have to think about the problems many of them face at home. However, as an English teacher, finding the right texts to really engage them is a battle with limited resources provided by the school.

My Project

Students will have access to current news from Scholastic Scope and thought provoking questions through these magazine subscriptions. Students will have the opportunity to read various articles and in groups, have discussions and debates about what they are reading. Having current issues throughout the year ensures that my students will always have access to the latest news, thus keeping them interested and engaged. Students will use these topics and articles as a springboard for vivid class discussions and then turn those discussions into writing convincing essays to support their argument. Students will increase their reading ability by practicing reading more often and will become better writers by writing about topics that interest them and using the articles as exemplar pieces of writing to emulate.

As adults, we have constant access to the most current newspapers and magazines to keep us informed and allow us to have spirited discussions.

Your donation to these subscriptions will allow my students the same opportunity and will help develop well-educated, well-read students, who will become lifelong learners and readers.
