Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Imagine curling up in your favorite chair with a good book to read. That is what I am looking for for my 6th grade students in my New York classroom. I am a 6th grade ELA teacher in a middle school with over 60% of our students eligible for free/reduced lunch.

We are establishing a Reader's Workshop to enable students to become life-long readers. Students will have the opportunity throughout the school year to spend time reading books they choose and have interest in. They will learn strategies throughout the year to ensure they are understanding and connecting to the books they read.

I am looking to hook all my students on the love of reading. One way is to give them some freedom in where they can read; they do not have to sit at their desks during independent reading time. Bean bag chairs will give some students the opportunity to kick back and relax as they read, just like adults like to do whenever we get the chance. One of the more comforting aspects of reading is the relaxing environment we get to create for ourselves as we get lost in our imaginations through reading. My students deserve the same chance while reading in school.

With a donation from you, my students can turn into life-long readers. When students become readers, they do better on tests, in school, with their writing, vocabulary and comprehension. It opens up possibilities and chances they may not otherwise get. Simple comfort is one way we can ensure our young people are turning to books instead of some other negative choices they all face. With your help, we can create a love of reading that will carry them far into the future.
