This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My wonderful students enjoy read-aloud time after recess. It is a time for all of us to come together, open a good book, and travel to faraway places. Many of my students are reading below grade level, but high-interest novels afford them the opportunity to dig into great books that are rich in vocabulary! During our read-aloud time, we discuss topics such as theme, character traits, and text structure. It is also a time for students to make predictions based on evidence. I love seeing my students hold their own books as they intently follow along during read-aloud time. At times, they can hardly wait until the next day to discover what happens next!
Books can also empower students to empathize with other people.
Island of the Blue Dolphins is a classic novel about survival. Students love listening to this book which happens to align with our fourth-grade social studies curriculum. Holes, on the other hand, is a more contemporary novel that touches on themes such as power, justice, and friendship. These books would make a fantastic addition to our small novel collection!
