I teach General Music to 4th and 5th grade students. I enjoy searching for ways to integrate the arts, culture and academics, particularly reading, language arts, science and math skills.
Our students are high-need with a large percentage of special education, free and reduced priced lunch students and minorities.
The largest minority group is Native American students. Over a third of the parents in our school district do not have a high school diploma. Our rural community is in an economically depressed area with high unemployment. Enrichment through Donors Choose would vastly enrich and improve my students' opportunities.
My Project
My students need additional Native American flutes, CDs and flute accessories. Our classroom funding was dramatically cut this year by the state legislature, so purchasing instruments or other supplies is nearly impossible. We were fortunate just to be able to maintain arts instruction for our students. The flutes we are requesting can be used to teach all three primary musical elements: rhythm, melody and harmony. Research indicates that students who study these musical elements demonstrate improvements in math and abstract thinking skills.
With the help of Donors Choose, my students will be enriched with Native American Culture and music.
Donors Choose can be a part of helping my students become more disciplined lifelong learners and leaders for tomorrow. The children's needs are great, but with your help, the opportunities can be even greater!
