Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Learning to write takes effort and motivation. Becoming an author requires sustained effort and practice. Everyone has a story to tell. We need materials to help us stick with the important job of becoming writers.
My 24 kindergarten students come from diverse ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds.
Our school is a public school in an urban neighborhood. Most of my students are eligible for free or reduced lunch. Some of my students are from military families. Many of my students are from single parent families. Some of my students are/have been homeless. Our neighborhood has parks, libraries, and other community resources. It also has gangs, poverty, and drugs. My students need to find success in school to overcome the obstacles.
My Project
The colored pencils and twist-up crayons will be used when students "publish" their best writing pieces. The materials will be used to enhance the illustrations. The magnetic clips will help students to be able to independently choose and display work that they are proud of. The dry-erase markers will be used with white boards to provide further novelty and motivation.
Writing is a critical skill for students to master.
By creating an environment in which writing is exciting, kindergarten students become authors. Daily writing practice provides the means by which young students learn to trust that they can write. Having special materials to use in publishing work to share enhances motivation. Everyone has a story to share. Thank you for being a part of ours.
