Creating Kind and Resilient Kids

My Students

I work in a wonderful elementary school in a rural part of Western Maine. Over 60% of the population meets the income level for free or reduced lunches. I provide social-emotional learning skills to all students in grades K-6 by teaching in the classroom setting. We address basic social skills through funny stories, as well as learn about the emotional response centers in the brain through mindfulness lessons and activities. With the input of teachers and administrative staff, students are identified for additional 1:1 support to help with more personal challenges as they relate to their home environment, or social and academic struggles.

It is my hope to continue to provide the skills our children need to develop into emotionally strong, resilient, generous, and caring adults; to lead and not follow, always with a kind heart.

We accomplish this through focusing on kindness and gratitude. I am always so impressed when I listen to their ideas about what it means to be a good person, and witness their acts of kindness toward one another and the adults in our school. It is a joy to be a part of this school in the role of guidance counselor!

My Project

These activities will focus on mindfulness, impulsivity and emotional regulation, character development, kindness. Any funds contributed for my classroom lessons or 1:1 student time will help purchase items that are needed for these activities. This will include items such as:

Clear jars, glitter, glue to create calming jars,

Putty, legos, sand tray, books, and other sensory tools for 1:1 needs,

Large poster boards to create Acts of Kindness posters throughout the school - to be completed during classroom sessions,

Dry erase markers and white boards for white board activities in small groups, classroom, and 1:1 settings (kids frequently like to write their thoughts on whiteboards and play games such as "word guess",
