Creating Informed, Active Citizens During Distance Learning!
Help me give my students an online subscription to Scholastic News. Scholastic News teaches Science, Social Studies and current events through engaging non-fiction stories.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Students learn best when they ask their own questions, set their own goals and can connect their learning to the real world. Inquiry based learning develops the imagination, critical thinking skills, creativity, cognitive skills, collaboration and allows children to appreciate other points-of-view. Currently, I am trying to provide these learning skills while students are learning at home.
I teach a group of 3rd grade, gifted students in an inner-city school in a large metropolitan city.
A large percentage of students at my school come from low-income households and thus all students have access to the free lunch program. Many of my students do not have the necessary tools including reliable technology or even reading materials at home to support their Distance Learning.
My Project
It is difficult to make learning meaningful and especially to teach science and social studies during a global pandemic and during Distance Learning. This subscription to the Third Grade Scholastic News magazine will help make learning more engaging and relevant for my students. Scholastic News magazines use standard aligned, student friendly non-fiction stories to teach Science, Social Studies and current events that are relevant to the world we live in today.
This resource will empower my students with the knowledge and skills they'll need to become informed, active citizens in our world.
