Creating Great Readers

My students need multiple ways and materials to learn “Sight Words” so that they will be great readers.

You can help create great readers in Kindergarten. I am a Kindergarten teacher in a community of high-need. We have dedicated parents and teachers who are striving to enhance the lives of so many students.

The dedicated parents and teachers of my school need help to support student learning. The Kindergarten students that I teach learn by hands-on experiences. Many students enter Kindergarten without the foundation to begin the process of learning how to read. I want to create a literature rich environment for my students so that they will all have a great foundation in which to start learning how to read.

In order to help students begin to read, they can start to memorize words such as "the" and "and". These words are called sight words because many of them are hard to sound out and it is better to memorize them. There are many sight words to learn and after students memorize them it becomes easier to read stories. Large magnets and dice with these sight words on them will provide students with a great opportunity to manipulate and work with the words. Also a set of tactile sight word cards will give students the opportunity to feel the words as they move their fingers over the sandpaper as they trace the letters found within the words.

With your generous donation my students will become great readers. They will learn sight words and develop a strong foundation to begin reading independently. The knowledge they will gain will continue to foster their academic achievements for years to come.
