Creating Future Scientists One Word At A Time

My students need cardstock and colored paper to create colored-coded vocabulary cards to help them grow.

My Students

These young scientists are all New Orleans natives living in the Lower 9th Ward - the area most impacted by Katrina. Many of the families were displaced. Although it has been a decade since the storm, schools are just now being relocated into permanent school buildings.

My students nearly jump out of their seats to participate in new class discoveries.

Their families are all heavily involved. These are excellent students from a strong community that require only the materials for learning. They will supply all the passion and tenacity.

My Project

Children from lower incomes will have been exposed to 30 million fewer words by the age of 3 than their more affluent peers. This creates great challenges in the classroom. I have taught for 4 years, and the students I teach now are hands down the most inquisitive, studious, and heartwarming group of scholars I have ever been privileged to teach.

By the end of this year, my students will be exposed to a minimum of 400 new science words in my classroom.

I am requesting cardstock and colored paper to make it easier for scholars to practice these new words in and out of the classroom. They receive a vocabulary quiz each week and are again assessed at the end of each unit. Vocabulary cards and colored pencils will allow us to learn these words in ways they find enjoyable.
