My Students
We are a small K-5 school filled with students who are wonderful to work with! They are a diverse group of students in terms of race, income, gender, and ability levels, all looking for a chance to be successful. I have students who work at high levels and love to be challenged, down to students who need that nudge.
Many of them struggle with issues adults couldn't deal with, but still find a way to come to school and participate in the learning process.
We are a family of learners, myself included. Every day is a new day of learning, loving, and respecting each other. We are an awesome community working hard at being the best that we can be!
My Project
Many of my students do not want to read. I think many of them, due to excessive testing, think reading is comprised of reading a passage and then answering questions on a worksheet or the computer.

Two of my students chose, "We Need Comic Books in the Classroom" as their presentation. Their words, "Comic books are cool, interesting, have pictures, and can teach you something." I agree with them 100%! They serve the same purpose as chapter books, and it is more likely they will be read by many more students.
I always tell my students, "I don't care what you are reading, as long as you are reading!"
Comic books take away the stigma of reading for struggling readers. Students are engaged and they have fun while they read. I have a few comic books in my room and my students enjoy them and ask for more.
I want them to read. I want them to enjoy reading. I want them to pick up a book voluntarily. Comic books in my classroom would be an awesome resource!
