My students need an expanded range of high interest, relatable novels to expand their love of reading, as well as build stamina before they reach high school.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Eighth grade students are inquisitive, interactive and interested in cutting edge, identifiable characters who relate to their middle school experience. My students come from various backgrounds, as well as knowledge base and abilities - from IEPs to English Language learners to GATE students. They learn about others who experience similar cultures and group dynamics. Essentially, they crave to know that there are others...just like them.
Students love books with strong, engaging and identifiable charachters.
They identify with protagonist attributes who defy the odds and overcome obstacles, yet live "ordinary" lives. Students gain insight, knowledge and appreciation for those who journey beyond their limits. They gain a glimpse of themselves in rich, vivid detail and well written story lines.
My Project
Eighth graders today are exposed to a variety of life experiences and cultural backgrounds. They crave storylines that are relatable, purposeful and authentic. Making meaning of the world around them comes to life when engaged with a book that touches upon their own experiences and dilemmas.
Young adult novels with engaging, realistic characters and plot lines hook student's interest, as well as guide them through the path of acceptable norms in modern society.
Their "coming of age" maturity level ranges from the innocent to the candid.
The goal, quite simply, is to place the right book in the hands of each student.
