This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
After reviewing food chains, I would like my students to create an edible food web using a variety of snack foods. Students choose an ecosystem that they will create using Hairbo gummy candies such as snakes, worms, bears, frogs, and cherries, or Swedish fish and sunflower seeds. The butterscotch candy will represent the sun. Once the snacks are chosen, students will describe the flow of energy and predict how changes to one species will affect the food web. The food web will be laid out on the white construction paper with arrows showing the flow of energy. A chart showing the type of animal and foods eaten will be placed in the top corner of the paper. Once the food web has been created, students will be able to show and explain who could potentially eat whom in an ecosystem.
Making an edible food web will not only be fun, but also be a hands-on activity for my students to remember how energy moves through food webs.
