One of my goals as a teacher is to foster my students' love for reading. This year my sixth grade students are very interested in learning about various people, their accomplishments, their contributions to the world around them, and the challenges that they have overcome. In my classroom, students like to participate in book circles. It can be difficult to find books that engage the students as well as meet the needs of their reading abilities. In order to provide my students with a variety of books and topics, I need to stock a large classroom library with multiple copies of the same books.
I want to expose my students to a more diverse group of books and expand their knowledge of other cultures.
The books that I have selected represent a variety of people and cultures. Students will be able to participate in partner, small group, and large group reading and discussions. Through these book circles, students will employ higher-level thinking skills, questioning, collaboration, and will engage in discussions. Through these purposeful activities, students will become more strategic readers, learn about different cultures, enhance their knowledge of history, and become more skilled at working together and communicating their thoughts and opinions.
