My Students

Our students are facing many challenges socially and academically and this, for some, impedes their learning. My students and parents rely on me to navigate them through the curriculum efficiently and effectively, while meeting their individual and collective needs.

We are a Title I urban school.

Each class has approximately 30 students, with no assistance. The majority of our students aren't on grade level, but are eager to learn when given the right mix of encouragement and support from both parents and teachers. This year we've built a community of caring and supportive students who look out for each other. I have a cozy classroom filled with vibrant personalities with varied interest and twice the number of boys than girls. I want to appeal to their interest as well because their needs and interests are different.

My Project

With the implementation of Common Core, our students are encouraged and required to develop higher order thinking skills while engaging and interacting with nonfiction text and more complex math skills at an earlier age. This is very challenging because some students are not developmentally ready for this level of academic rigor. We are currently at a transitional point as we are rethinking how to teach our students. We're encouraging independence and self-pace learning which require more resources at varying levels. These differentiated resources - Differentiated Activities for Teaching Math Skills, Differentiated Activities for Teaching Reading Comprehension, Tools for Differentiating Content Area, Book Differentiated Non-Fiction Reading Gr. 2 and Study Cards Math Facts - requested will help me guide my students through the Common Core curriculum ensuring I'm meeting all needs; challenging my gifted learners, enriching my grade level learners and supporting my challenged learners.

Creating differentiated activities and leveled reading assignments can be daunting and stressful.

Meeting IEP goals for multiple students - without them feeling any different because of their skill level - is just as challenging. All students want to meet success but need to do so on their level. These resources will help build their confidence and empower them to change their attitude from "I can't" to "I can" with the right tools, encouragement and support.
