My Project
I currently work in a school that services students with various needs, including autism. This year, I am teaching a 12:1 K,1,2 class filled with curious and energetic learners.
I have non-verbal students in my class that require additional support.
My students require advanced visual supports to aid in their communication and understanding during learning.
Having access to a printer in my room will allow me to have colorful supporting visuals for my students to use throughout the day.
With my students being non-verbal and/or language-delayed, it is often hard for them to communicate their wants, needs, questions, and answers. Having visual supports readily available will increase their learning and engagement with endless possibilities.
Some of my students are diagnosed with an eating disorder in which they ingest things that are not considered food, such as paper. This requires me to laminate all papers, books, and materials provided to my students. Having laminating sheets will allow me to provide visuals and learning materials to my students in a safe way. Velcro dots will be used to adhere visuals around the classroom, including students’ individual learning schedules and materials.
Lastly, marker dots will be used with students who have difficulty using a crayon or pencil. This provides an easy, yet engaging way for them to participate in projects.
