Creating Culturally Relevant Science Content in STEM by CRSci

My Students

There is a common misconception that students from different cultural backgrounds are unmotivated and unwilling to learn. Despite the majority of my students being people of color with low socioeconomic status and/or non-English speaking backgrounds, they are beyond eager to succeed in science. My students love performing hands-on experiments, in which they take the lead and become the scientist. Likewise, they also love hearing their personal stories incorporated into the concepts being taught because it becomes interesting to them. This type of learning and teaching is known as "culturally relevant teaching."

If my students can see themselves doing it and caring about it, then they are more likely to learn it and remember it.

As they see themselves represented more, their overall student engagement will increase. When engagement increases, academic achievement follows suit.

My Project

There is a lack of cultural representation in science. For example, my students of color are hardly seen in textbooks and online videos. As I noticed this under-representation, I founded "Culturally Relevant Science" or CRSci. The goal of CRSci is to produce curriculum-aligned science content that is also relatable, affordable, and enjoyable to diverse students.

CRSci's goal is to create online experiments, lessons, and demonstrations that include people that look like my students.

When my students see animations and scientists that look like themselves, they will be more interested to engage. Also, this generation of students loves to learn through online and video mediums. As they are more engaged, their academic achievement also increases.

The resources requested for this project will allow CRSci to produce higher quality videos. I already have a camera, lights, and a tripod. However, these resources will further enhance the material being made. Microphones will allow me to perform experiments further from the camera. Extension cords will allow me to do experiments outside. The backdrop equipment will allow me to create consistent-looking animations. The extra batteries for my camera will allow me to make longer videos. The external hard drive will enable me to store all of the content in one place. And finally, the trolley case will allow me to easily transport my recording equipment to nicer filming locations.

In the long-run, CRSci will close the gap between my students and science careers. If my students fail to see people similar to themselves in these careers, then the career seems like it is not for them. With these enhanced videos, my students and students across the country will see professional content that represents them. This will show that students from different cultural backgrounds should and can be included in the content that dominates curriculum today.
