Creating Critical Thinkers

My students need crayons, colored pencils, glue sticks and notebooks to create interactive notebooks that will store their learning, enhance creative and critical thinking and help them take ownership of their learning.

My Students

I am the luckiest educator there is!! I get to be called teacher by the most amazing group of students. Despite any struggles they face- and some face hardships that most adults can't imagine- my students come to school everyday with a determination and a hopefulness that cannot be contained.

I learn as much from my students as they do from me.

I have learned words in Spanish, French, Farsi and Lao to name a few. I have seen children go from non readers to voracious readers and non speakers to loquacious speakers.

We celebrate each accomplishment along the way no matter how small because to my students every milestone counts. My school lacks a lot of resources- technology and air conditioning to name a few, but what we lack in facilities, my students make up for in heart and tenacity and I can't imagine teaching anywhere else.

My Project

My students use interactive notebooks in my ELA classroom. Interactive notebooks are a proven strategy to help students take ownership of their learning and to develop the critical thinking skills that will help them be successful in their lives after they graduate. Students need the notebook itself to begin the process of input (teacher led) and processing (student creativity). And, in order to use the interactive notebook to its fullest potential, the students must have crayons, colored pencils and gel pens to add color. Adding color creates connections to the concepts they're learning. These connections help students reach that deep understanding that all teachers strive for.

So many times students are not allowed to be creative in their responses.

These notebooks give students the freedom, the space and the permission to be creative and to explore the concepts they're learning about in class. My students love using their interactive notebooks!! They are so protective of them- each one bringing a sense of great pride to its owner. It is a joy to see students who don't always participate orally totally nail a concept through the learning in their notebook. The supplies included in this project will be used to allow students to feel that sense of pride in ownership and in their own academic achievement all year long.
