Creating, Counting, and Learning From Home in Brooklyn

Help me give my students construction paper, paint, markers, sensory sand, tracing, counting, and word-building activities!

My Students

I teach a group of 6 students who are full of energy, creativity, and fun. All of my students are diagnosed on the autism spectrum and due to their disabilities they have difficulties with communication, daily life skills, and social interactions. In our class. we focus on helping them build these skills and become more engaged in the world around them which they are so eager to explore and understand.

Myself, and my classroom team of 3 paraprofessionals, work with each student using individualized programs to help them reach and exceed their goals.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, my students are stuck at home and many do not leave the house at all since they do not have backyards. My students are on 12 month education plans due to their disabilities and most likely will not even be able to return to school for the summer. Many of their daily learning activities involve video conferencing and interactive resources like Boom cards and live worksheets. Many of my students do not have supplies to engage in more interactive activities such as art projects and do not have materials to work on their fine motor skills at home.

My Project

I am requesting materials for my student to be able to engage in teacher directed art projects during distance learning. These projects will allow her to continue to develop her fine motor skills and learn through play. My student is also learning to read and recognize numbers 1-20. Having materials where she can practice building 3 letter words and play with numbers will help support her learning process at home. She is a visual and tactile learner and having these hands-on supplies will make online learning more accessible for her.

These materials will be sent directly to a 3rd graders home to help her improve her reading, counting and fine motor skills.
